Data General was born from the collective expertise of professionals who have spent over 20 years in the networking industry. Our journey began in 2001, a time when networks were still slow and unreliable, and internet connections were limited to ADSL technology. This technology, reliant on copper telephone cables, had a critical drawback: it could only reach about 3 km from the operator’s nodes. As a result, many towns and rural areas lacked internet access.
In 2003, we made our first breakthrough. Using available technology—2.4 GHz and 802.11b wireless protocols, which were limited to 2 Mbps—we successfully installed the first outdoor wireless link. As we gained more experience, we evolved our expertise and began deploying point-to-multipoint networks. This enabled us to deliver internet access to areas where ADSL wasn’t feasible.
By 2005, wireless technology had matured into a powerful solution for providing widespread internet access. As demand for connectivity skyrocketed, we were part of an emerging sector that gave rise to the first Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs). Our role in this sector allowed us to grow alongside a rapidly expanding market.
Expanding Horizons: Latin America and Beyond
In 2011, we took our experience to Latin America, replicating the successful business model we had developed in Europe. We provided the technology and expertise necessary to bring internet access to underserved areas, becoming a trusted partner for companies and communities across the region.
As the first fiber-optic networks began to roll out a decade later, wireless technology became less crucial for providing internet in most areas. By that time, however, we had already diversified our offerings. We began assisting and training integrators to deploy corporate data networks with the latest WiFi technology and cutting-edge protocols, ensuring that businesses could operate with secure, high-performance networks.
Adapting to a Changing World: The COVID Era and Beyond
The year 2020 brought unprecedented challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic transformed how businesses operate, making remote work a permanent fixture in many industries. During this time, we found ourselves facing one of the biggest supply crises in history as equipment manufacturers struggled to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.
It was at this moment that we began working on an ambitious new project: launching our own range of products. Our goal was simple but vital: to provide secure, reliable, and efficient data networks at a time when connectivity had never been more important.
At the same time, the rise of e-commerce platforms and marketplaces reshaped the way networks were deployed. Consumers, influenced by online reviews and tutorials, started purchasing and installing equipment themselves. Unfortunately, many of these installations lacked the proper expertise, which led to an increase in network vulnerabilities and cybersecurity threats.
The Rise of Cybercrime and the Need for Security
As cybercrime surged, the risks to improperly installed networks grew exponentially. Cyber-attacks caused significant financial losses for businesses and individuals alike. Recognizing the need for stronger cybersecurity, we committed ourselves to providing secure data networks, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are often the most vulnerable to cyber threats.
