Access Points modes: FAT and FIT

FAT vs FIT Access Points: Understanding the difference

In wireless networks, access points are key to ensuring strong connectivity. Two popular types are FAT (Full Anonymous Terminal) and FIT (Flexible Intelligent Terminal). While both provide WiFi access, they differ in their functionalities.

FAT Access Point

In the context of access points, FAT stands for “Fully Autonomous Terminal.” A FAT access point is a standalone device with its own operating system, capable of independently managing all necessary functions to provide wireless connectivity. This includes processing, memory, and the ability to handle configuration and management directly on the device itself, without needing a central controller. Because of this, FAT access points offer flexibility and robustness, but they may require more effort to configure and maintain individually, compared to FIT access points.

FIT Access Point

In the context of access points, FIT stands for “Flexible Intelligent Thin.” A FIT access point is a lightweight device that lacks its own operating system or management capabilities. Instead, it relies on a central controller for configuration and management. This allows for centralized network management, making it easier to administer multiple access points at once. FIT access points are more compact and cost-effective, but they depend on the central controller, which could pose a risk if the controller fails.

FAT vs FIT in Data General Access Points

Data General’s WiFi access points can operate in either FAT or FIT modes, providing flexibility based on network needs:

  • FAT Mode: The access point is configurable autonomously via a web browser or command-line interface (CLI), offering standalone control.

  • FIT Mode: There are two variants:

    • FIT Cloud: Managed through Data General’s WIS Cloud, allowing centralized control of multiple APs in the network.
    • FIT AC: Managed via a physical AP controller (AC) installed within the local network.

Select the ideal access point for your network from Data General’s WiFi Access Points catalog and decide whether FITor FAT installation is the best fit for your needs.
